BCS originated from a house course at Duke where undergraduates created a service-learning project as part of the University Scholars Program. Lilly Library, opened in 1927, was originally built to meet the needs of around 650 students. However, after only one partial renovation project in 1993 and the growth of the University’s first-year classes to over 1,700 students, Lilly is now closed for renovations until summer 2026.
