After the first week of the season, Duke men’s basketball checks in at No. 6 in the AP poll. The Blue Zone is here to break down movement around the country.
In the weekend’s highly anticipated matchup, No. 1 Duke defeated No. 2 Wake Forest 2-0 on the road to take the ACC regular season title.
On Cancer Awareness night, No. 10 Duke competed in its fifth top-10 matchup of the season, securing a 1-0 win over No. 9 Boston College at home. The first half featured back and forth between the two teams with limited offensive opportunities. However, an early second half goal by senior Logan Clouser cemented the victory for the Blue Devils.
The California heat proved to be no match for Duke, and it was certainly no problem for junior Alaina McVeigh, who became the 25th Duke player to reach 25 career goals.

After falling to the host team in Northwestern, the fifth-ranked Blue Devils (3-1) closed out the ACC/BIG 10 Cup with a 2-0 victory against No. 4 Maryland (3-1). Maryland was able to sustain offensive zone time throughout the competition until a lone goal in the third period by senior midfielder Josephine Palde cemented Duke’s first ranked win of the season.
Duke defeated William and Mary and UMass Lowell to open its season 2-0. Head coach Pam Bustin won her 163rd contest, the most in Blue Devil history.
Bustin’s squad has the potential to do something special this season, but the question remains whether they can break through and takedown teams like Northwestern and North Carolina. With plenty of talent and strong chemistry, the 2024 season should be filled with plenty of excitement.
With this upcoming season being head coach Robbie Church’s last with the Blue Devils, the pressure is on for Duke to return to the tournament as a positive send-off to the winningest coach in Blue Devil history.
