Duke doctor aids ongoing Nepalese earthquake relief

In April 2015 a devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck Nepal in the Kathmandu Valley killing 9,000 people and leaving over 23,000 injured. Mike Landry, Chief of the Doctor of Physical Therapy Division, was in Bangladesh when the earthquakes happened but when Handicap International, a non-profit organization that responds to natural disasters and assists in survivor recovery and reintegration, asked him to provide assistance to those injured by the earthquakes he jumped on board.


A new method of delivering cancer drugs using nanoparticles has allowed drugs to destroy tumors nearly twice as effectively as current FDA-approved methods.

Duke researchers fight cancer with nanoparticles

Duke scientists have discovered a breakthrough method of delivering cancer drugs that drastically improves their efficiency. This summer, a team led by Ashutosh Chilkoti—chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering—published a study describing the new technique where nanoparticles are modified to package and deliver a common chemotherapy drug called paclitaxel.
