Imagine my surprise as I am watching the season three premiere of HBO’s “The White Lotus” and Duke isn’t just mentioned within minutes of the show starting, but an entire subplot revolves around a kid choosing between Duke and UNC. Is this play about us?
In the CGSD this past Valentine’s Day, for a few hours all the bad in the world was shoved away and replaced by love and brightness. Between the craft making and the cookies lay a profound spirit that will not be diminished anytime soon.
“Severance” is somehow both utterly unfathomable and grounded in reality. Through its hyperbole, some light is be shed on the harms and problems of the American corporate culture experience. Beyond the strength of its message, the show is also a strong, twist-packed viewing experience that everybody should watch.
Some eagerly await the winners of the Academy Awards. Others are interested in Nobel Prize winners or Olympic medalists. But, for tabloid fanatics, one of the most important days of the year is when People Magazine bestows the “Sexiest Man Alive” title. In a celebrity world where beauty serves as currency, who is the richest? Who is the sexiest of all the sexy?
On Nov. 10, Duke Music hosted a Faculty Recital called “New Creations.” The concert highlighted renowned classical soprano saxophonist Dr. Susan Fancher, Lecturing Fellow of Music and a leading advocate of contemporary music.
“Girls” was innovative for its honest take on the dating lives and career success of post-grad women. But, its cynical view on female friendship is not one viewers should believe is the whole truth. For the majority of the show, the girls are not friends. When they “were,” they repeatedly break girl code.
While Duke’s Centennial has given us the opportunity to reflect on how far we’ve progressed in 100 years, it is vital to not focus solely on Duke’s more modern and glamorous developments. The Centennial is about remembering the past and the people that got us here, not just looking toward the future. We can thank the Duke Dance Program for reminding us of that lesson.
Inspired by my love for East Campus, and in order to express my gratitude for it, I want to give a tribute to East Campus while also providing a bit of guidance for incoming first-years on how to make the most of their experience on East.
As the semester comes to an end, the final hurrah for most students is LDOC and its long-awaited concert. Duke University Union (DUU) has outdone themselves this year and planned a fantastic lineup.
We have come so far in culturally accepting that women can do anything a man can do, so the idea that being logical is an inherently masculine trait is regressive and disappointing to see in the mainstream.
