Duke administrators pointed to potential “employment action,” delaying typical operating budget and capital budget reviews and the use of artificial intelligence as strategies Duke plans to implement in the coming months.
A total of 1,982 undergraduate students cast a ballot in this year’s DSG election, which was open from noon Monday to noon Tuesday. The previous election cycle received 500 more votes, with a total turnout of 2,482 students.
The University received a record-high 53,223 Regular Decision applications, bringing the cycle’s acceptance rate to an all-time low of 3.67%, down from 4.1% last year.
The Chronicle will be accepting endorsement letters for the 2025 Duke Student Government presidential and executive vice presidential elections. Submissions will be reviewed from March 21 to March 29. All accepted endorsements will be published by March 30 at 11:59 p.m.
Upcoming spending adjustments include suspending capital spending, freezing staff hiring and salary mid-year adjustments, reviewing all faculty hiring practices and slowing all non-compensation spending. The administrators added that these immediate steps will be followed by additional measures as leaders develop “cost-reduction proposals” across the rest of the University.

The campaign, dubbed “Made for This,” aims to prioritize funding and development across four main pillars: Duke Sciences and Technology, the Duke Climate Commitment, the undergraduate student experience and Duke Health.
The announcement marks the third time Duke has implemented the policy this academic year after over three years of no measurable snowfall on campus.
