'We always believe': Sluggish starts plagued Duke women's basketball this week, but its fight never wavered

Regardless of any early deficit, the Blue Devils play with a sort of resilient energy that becomes infectious when they gain momentum. In all of their defeats, however, this brand of basketball was not enough to overcome their first-half woes. Save for its matchup against perennial top-dog South Carolina, Duke’s losses appear self-inflicted rather than a result of a disparity in talent and skill.

‘Weren't able to finish’: Missed shots, turnovers cost No. 14 Duke women’s basketball in loss at North Carolina

Duke has struggled getting off to quick starts on offense at points this season, mostly notably in its loss to South Florida a few weeks ago, and Thursday’s matchup was an amalgamation of that weakness. Everything that the Blue Devils did so well against Pittsburgh — bench points, points in transition, second-chance points — felt stilted against North Carolina.

Costly turnovers and first-half defense prevent Duke women's basketball from comeback win against South Florida

In a hostile away game at the Yuengling Center against South Florida before a long-awaited break, Duke could not dig itself out of a massive first-half hole, losing 65-56. Heading into halftime, the Bulls led 33-15, as the visitors committed 12 turnovers and scored only six field goals. But in typical Blue Devil manner, head coach Kara Lawson and her team weren’t going to collapse.

Fournier, Okananwa and Richardson’s individual performances led the way in No. 9 Duke's rout of Wofford

From screen assists to tenacious rebounding on both ends of the floor, Duke out-hustled, out-ran and out-dogged the Terriers in every which way. In the first quarter alone, the Blue Devils snagged a whopping 10 offensive rebounds, which they paired with 11 second-chance points. Every loose ball, whether off the rim or the hands of a Wofford player, seemed to end up firmly grasped against a blue jersey.
