Simen Guttormsen crowned national champion in pole vault, Johnson tabbed All-American at NCAA Indoor Championship

Friday, two Blue Devils competed at the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships in Virginia Beach, Va. Graduate thrower Christian Johnson placed ninth with a throw of 22.47m, securing second-team All America honors. Pole vaulter Simen Guttormsen cleared a personal best 5.71m to become the second-ever Blue Devil man to bring home an individual NCAA indoor championship.

Duke track and field competes at ACC Indoor Championships, men finish 7th, women 10th

While several Blue Devils did receive All-ACC recognition, the meet was the culmination of a relatively disappointing season riddled with injuries, particularly on the women’s side for head coach Shawn Wilbourn’s squad. The women’s squad finished 10th at the meet after Monday’s finale. However, the men’s fared much better than expected, finishing in a tie for seventh.

Blue Devils crowd podiums in Blacksburg and Chapel Hill as Duke track and field begins indoor season with a bang

The Blue Devils came out hot off the blocks as their first meets since winter break were defined by program records and a slew of top-five finishes. Separated by 197 miles, a portion of the team made the trek to Blacksburg, Va., for the Virginia Tech Invitational, while the remainder took to Tobacco Road for the UNC Dick Taylor Carolina Challenge.

With several ACC teams coming to town in lieu of conference championships in a month, Duke put on a show on its home turf, displaying the completeness of its roster with top-five finishes across the board during the weekend. The women’s team proved particularly dominant, helping the Blue Devils shatter numerous meet and program records in the process.
