This past Sunday night, 34 million Americans and I watched the Academy Awards. It was a four-hour slog for the most part, with highlights few and far between.
ArtCon, Duke’s student-led arts and creativity summit, was held on Friday and Saturday of last week.
Barbara Hammond, a playwright in residence at New Dramatists in New York, has been visiting Duke for two weeks to work with students in Jody McAuliffe’s advanced acting class and stage her work in progress, “We Are Pussy Riot.” The play is inspired by the Russian punk band Pussy Riot, who have used performance art to protest and defy the regime of President Vladmir Putin.
When Radiation City, the Portland-based sci-fi pop band, was about to disappear and the leading couple—vocalist and keyboardist Lizzy Ellison and guitar player Cameron Spies—behind it was about to break up, something happened. Music happened. Spies and Ellison decided to talk through their issues, put hard feelings aside and start a new musical adventure.
