In wake of Harvey, live score of 'Beasts of the Southern Wild' strikes a chord

In 2012, the film “Beasts of the Southern Wild” earned recognition at the infamous Sundance and Cannes film festivals in addition to garnering four Oscar nominations, bestowing “universal acclaim” upon director Behn Zeitlin from viewers and critics alike— the oft-overlooked score that smoothly transitions the audience from feelings of tears to triumph was co-produced by Zeitlin himself.

Carolina Theatre's Retro Film Series continues this fall

The Retro Film Series continues at the Carolina Theatre in downtown Durham from July to December. The series will celebrate its 20th birthday next year and includes RetroFantasma, RetroClassics, RetroTreasures and RetroAmore—four sections in which anyone in their mid-30s to early-40s will find the fancy of his or her youth.

Hidden talents

With syllabus week long gone, the real first week of school is now half-way over. The part of me that dreads actually putting effort into classes has taken over and paralyzed my brain—a sensation best described as that spinning, rainbow wheel that shows up when a Mac momentarily freezes, buffering right inside my head.

Duke Players parody 'The Glass Menagerie' in orientation show

Along with “The Great Gatsby,” “Hamlet” and “Fahrenheit 451,” Tennessee Williams’ “The Glass Menagerie” is a nearly inescapable element of most high school English curricula. The play, originally produced in 1944, centers around the story of Laura, a sickly and shy daughter obsessed with her collection of glass animals, whose mother Amanda seeks to find her a “gentleman caller” with the help of Tom, Laura’s brother.
