How to celebrate Halloween in the Triangle

Spooky season is in full swing here at Duke as students have begun planning their costumes and making plans for Halloween night. While many students head to Chapel Hill for Homegrown Halloween, a Franklin Street celebration that welcomes thousands of attendees, there are plenty of other options in the triangle for a fun night.

Durham civil rights tour is a walk through history

Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Brown v. Board of Education, Montgomery bus boycotts, sit-ins. We’ve grown up learning about segregation; we’ve grown accustomed to the same black and white photos of labeled water fountains, the same sparkling four words that have come to represent an entire movement: “I have a dream.”

'Nuthin’ 2 Prove' is nothing new from Lil Yachty

As one of the most recognizable rappers in recent history, Lil Yachty has accomplished a lot during his short tenure on the mainstream rap scene. With two songs peaking within the the Billboard Top 10 and a record deal with industry giants Quality Control, Yachty’s career blew up in a matter of months. However, after a disappointing second studio album in “Lil Boat 2,” Yachty, ironically, had a lot to prove on his new studio album “Nuthin’ 2 Prove.” Is this the key that will finally cement Lil Yachty’s place in the Atlanta trap scene?

On slasher flicks and final girls

At the end of “Scream 4,” the screen cuts away from the killer’s face to black, and Ida Maria’s “Bad Karma” starts to play: “You better believe in karma / Baby it’s gonna sting / The wheel of life’s gonna do you in / So I don’t really have to do a thing.” As a viewer, you smile and relish in the fact that the killer finally got their comeuppance. Sure, it came after two hours of meaningless deaths, cheap jump scares and gallons of fake blood, but justice has prevailed, and karma, along with it.

Oktoberfest brings German food and culture to Duke's campus

The patio outside Au Bon Pain is usually populated by busy students eager to finish their homework, or by hungry ones who prefer the natural air to the AC’s constant blast inside. On Friday, however, the area became home to a dazzling crowd celebrating Oktoberfest, a traditional German holiday held annually at the beginning of fall.

Looking back at 'The Big Easy'

Although Patrick Dougherty’s sculpture “The Big Easy" was projected to be on display until 2019, it was removed from the Duke Gardens Aug. 22 due to rain damage sustained since its construction in February 2017. The saplings used to weave the structure had started to deteriorate, and Duke Gardens opted to remove the entire instillation before it became a safety hazard.

CDS Dorothea-Lange Taylor Prize recipient discusses vulnerability and immigrant identity

As a recipient of the Center for Documentary Studies’ annual Dorothea Lange-Paul Taylor Prize, Mexican-American photographer Daniel Ramos has crafted a portfolio that can scrupulously capture his life’s winding contours: He was born in Chicago but now lives in Nuevo León, Mexico, and he spent his formative years rotating between these two distinctive places.

Loving to hate Radiohead

Over the summer, I attended a screening of Paul Thomas Anderson’s music documentary “Junun,” which featured a Q&A with the director himself along with some of his co-conspirators in the making of the film. Among them was Jonny Greenwood, who has become Anderson’s chosen composer, responsible for the scores for “There Will Be Blood,” “Inherent Vice” and, most recently, “Phantom Thread.”

'A Star is Born' retells a classic tale of fame and sacrifice

Standing on the side of the stage as a stadium crowd roars and Bradley Cooper’s teasing cowboy crooner begs her to join him, Lady Gaga’s Ally has a choice to make. She can walk out on the stage and sing a duet with him, or she can let the opportunity of a lifetime pass. It’s a trope that you’ve seen a dozen times, but you can’t help the voice in your head begging her to do it. You know she’s going out there, but God, what if she doesn’t?

Sacred sound

Contrary to popular belief, the ideal place to watch a concert is not center stage, but rather from the left-hand side, stage right, about three feet from the speakers.
