RECESS | STAFF NOTE

On slasher flicks and final girls

At the end of “Scream 4,” the screen cuts away from the killer’s face to black, and Ida Maria’s “Bad Karma” starts to play: “You better believe in karma / Baby it’s gonna sting / The wheel of life’s gonna do you in / So I don’t really have to do a thing.” As a viewer, you smile and relish in the fact that the killer finally got their comeuppance. Sure, it came after two hours of meaningless deaths, cheap jump scares and gallons of fake blood, but justice has prevailed, and karma, along with it.

Sacred sound

Contrary to popular belief, the ideal place to watch a concert is not center stage, but rather from the left-hand side, stage right, about three feet from the speakers.

Major decisions

After returning home from my Duke Engage in Charlotte this summer, I spent a good chunk of my month before school thinking about school. Perhaps too much of that time. But this year is an important one. Sophomore year is major declaration year.

On water, family and friends

I’ve always been excited when it comes to my turn to write a staff note, for I see it as an opportunity to force myself to sort my thoughts and reflect on how I’ve grown over the semester.

Getting the job

Everyone has their thing at Duke. Some talented, ambitious people occupy themselves by juggling passion upon passion with classes and clubs. I will forever count myself lucky that I found my thing during my first week at Duke: Recess.
