The West has failed North Koreans

I only wish that when we discuss economic sanctions, military operations, or assassination attempts to curl the regime, we remember that there are 25 million people who are unable to comprehend the very notion of freedom.

Duking it out over college rankings

U.S News & World Report released its annual list of the so called “Best Colleges” in the country last Monday night, and since then, the results have been circulating across campus. Much to the surprise of current Blue Devils and Alumni alike, the new 2018 rankings placed Duke at 9th best in the national universities category, one spot lower than last year’s score of 8th.

Harvey: A reminder that resources matter

Even if there is a stigma that shouldn't exist around using these mental and emotional resources at Duke, the fact that they exist in the first place is a luxury in comparison to other places. If Duke decided to get rid of CAPS all of a sudden, there would be tremendous backlash from students, especially given the other amenities our tuition covers (like Duke's grass). I recognize that resources are much more accessible to Duke than Houston, while also acknowledging that both communities are both fantastic, loving, places that I call home.

A risible tax system that demands reform

Congress could attempt to close the individual loopholes that permit the practice, but a more appealing and enduring solution would be to craft a simplified, reformed tax system that encourages corporate investment in the United States, rather than sending companies fleeing from the country. As for the individual income tax, both Democrats and Republicans ought to set aside partisan debates on the appropriate levels of taxation for different income groups and condemn the sheer complexity of the tax system levied on individuals.

Learning from Nixon's failings

The bitter debates over how to honor Nixon demonstrate one way we can honor a tragically flawed public servant, while also fostering an honest conversation about his failings and how we should remember him.

Remember the 11th of September

While we listen to the annual roll call of the lives lost, we should be cognizant about the effects that time has had on our memories and attachments to 9/11. We should reflect on how this day changed our country, New York, and our individual lives.

A category four misunderstanding

So, particularly as the American public searches for someone to blame for these consecutive, devastating events, be on the lookout for superficial analyses and unwarranted finger-pointing. Often, the way we frame science drives the narrative more than the science itself.

Stopping time

After careful consideration, I realized that by re-imagining my daily goal in a task-oriented manner I was able to regain my old enthusiasm and carry through to the end with vigor.

Did someone say, 'Natas Teews'?

I, an eternally practicing member of the Reformed Church of Satan, can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that listening to rock music turned me away from the arms of God, straight into the arms, and fiery wings, of our Dark Master, Lucifer.

Always a Blue Devil

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and other loved ones of Bobby Menges, Michael Doherty, Jeff Burke, Crystal Sollinger, Kris Harrison and the patient abroad the LifeFlight. May they rest in peace, and may the music they brought to our campus and to the lives of those around them continue to resound.

Setting the Standard

Institutions are defined by the individuals who inhabit them, leaving it up to us as students to write, follow, and enforce the standards we want our community to follow. Come and join us this year for conversations about community and change.
