Several Duke alumni and former professors and employees were on the ballot this midterm election. They’ve seen a mixed bag of results as elections come to a close across the nation.
Despite the lack of a dual-chamber Republican supermajority, one professor said that abortion rights in North Carolina are still up in the air. Every single Democratic congressperson would have to back Gov. Roy Cooper’s veto and they would find no sympathy in a newly Republican-controlled judiciary, he said.
Duke is rolling out new policies aimed at increasing on-campus social gatherings, including funding alcohol for student group events. Students can also reserve campus and residential spaces for social events, including those with alcohol.
DSG President Lana Gesinsky said that the policy isn’t meant to promote that social events require alcohol. Rather, the legislation seeks to solve an equity issue.

Republicans needed a net gain of three seats in the House and two seats in the Senate to reach a three-fifths majority in each and gain a supermajority in the General Assembly. They reached those two Senate seats but only saw a net gain of two seats in the House.
