With the impressive results of the 2023 season, all eyes were on whether the Blue Devils could cement themselves as a top competitor in the ACC or if they would fall back into their previous struggles. Head coach Pam Bustin’s squad reassured the world of field hockey that its performance last season was no fluke.
Duke fell to the undefeated Tar Heels 3-0 in Karen Shelton Stadium, ending its tournament run and its season.
The last time Duke played field hockey at North Carolina’s Karen Shelton Stadium was last season’s heartbreaking Final Four loss to Northwestern. This time, however, the Blue Devils took on No. 8 Maryland in the first round of the NCAA tournament and triumphed 1-0, advancing to the national quarterfinals.
After a 2-0 result from a penalty shootout, No. 2-seed Duke fell to No. 3-seed Boston College Wednesday evening in Winston-Salem, N.C., ending the Blue Devils’ run in the 2024 ACC tournament. Duke beat Wake Forest on the same field the day prior in the tournament’s quarterfinals, and were hoping to face-off against rival and top-seeded North Carolina in the final for the second year in a row.
In the ACC tournament quarterfinals, No. 6 Duke field hockey traveled to Winston-Salem Tuesday to take on Wake Forest. Despite facing a valiant defense by the Demon Deacons early in the game, the Blue Devils ultimately prevailed, winning 4-1 and clinching a ticket to the ACC semifinals.
This snapshot is emblematic of a game plagued by missed opportunity. Duke lost a seven-game shutout streak in a 5-2 defeat to North Carolina Friday night in Durham.
On Cancer Awareness night, No. 10 Duke competed in its fifth top-10 matchup of the season, securing a 1-0 win over No. 9 Boston College at home. The first half featured back and forth between the two teams with limited offensive opportunities. However, an early second half goal by senior Logan Clouser cemented the victory for the Blue Devils.
Riding a four-game win streak, Duke extended it to six with two dominant shutouts — 3-0 against Louisville and 4-0 against VCU.

After falling to the host team in Northwestern, the fifth-ranked Blue Devils (3-1) closed out the ACC/BIG 10 Cup with a 2-0 victory against No. 4 Maryland (3-1). Maryland was able to sustain offensive zone time throughout the competition until a lone goal in the third period by senior midfielder Josephine Palde cemented Duke’s first ranked win of the season.
Duke defeated William and Mary and UMass Lowell to open its season 2-0. Head coach Pam Bustin won her 163rd contest, the most in Blue Devil history.
Bustin’s squad has the potential to do something special this season, but the question remains whether they can break through and takedown teams like Northwestern and North Carolina. With plenty of talent and strong chemistry, the 2024 season should be filled with plenty of excitement.
