College fencing 101: All you need to know about events, scoring and Duke's season

Fencing, the sport of sword fighting, is played on a 14 meter long metal strip known as a piste. A competition between two fencers is called a bout. Fencers earn points in a bout by scoring touches on their opponents that are registered by an electronic machine. An electrical impulse is transmitted to the machine when the tip of a sword makes contact with the opponent’s body. 


Duke fencing ended its fall slate facing off against stiff competition on both the men's and women's side.

Duke fencing experiences mixed results in Elite Invitational, last meet of fall season

At Penn’s Tse Center in Philadelphia, the Blue Devils fought courageously in their final meet of the calendar year. The No. 6 women’s team went 3-2 in its matches against No. 3 Columbia, No. 4 Princeton, No. 10 Ohio State, No. 14 Stanford and Air Force. The No. 10 men’s team finished the day going 2-3 in its matches against No. 3 Columbia, No. 4 Princeton, No. 6 Ohio State, Air Force and Stanford.

Duke fencing 2024-25 season preview

Duke fencing entered last season with a string of question marks hanging over its head. After over a decade of top-10 finishes, the program was passed to the hands of new head coach Omar Elgeziry. In combination with a relatively younger roster, there was no guarantee that the team would be able to adjust to the coaching changes and deliver championship-caliber results so quickly.
