Students often transfer to Duke in search of more academic rigor or a course of study their previous institution didn’t offer, but the moment they receive their offer letter, they are immersed in a tight-knit community of advisors and peers.
Throughout last spring and summer, DKU administrators said that classes would return in-person, but some classes are still only being offered online this fall.
Duke Kunshan University, originally established in September 2013 as a partnership between Duke and Wuhan University, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this month.

Dinin has previously taught two courses centered around social media and content production, and his so-called “TikTok classes” are spurring a social media frenzy. During spring 2023, his students’ content reached over a quarter of a billion people around the world, according to Dinin.
Arcidiacono, William Henry Glasson distinguished professor of economics, was retained by the petitioner, Students for Fair Admissions, as an expert. Among other results, Arcidiacono found in 2022 that Asian American applicants to Harvard received significantly lower “personal ratings” and overall ratings than applicants of other races, despite there being “fairly small” racial differences in other factors that are considered in the admissions process.
Three of the 37 undergraduates who applied to the Board of Trustees standing committees were selected, according to Epps. Among the criteria used to select the students were if they had a “demonstrated understanding of the role and the purpose of the committee,” as well as any campus involvements and extracurricular activities.
The Career Center’s new data collection mechanism is significantly more comprehensive, with an 84% knowledge rate that includes information about students’ careers as late as the December after their graduation. Although the Career Center only has data for the Class of 2022 so far, the results of the new data collection method offer a glimpse into the lives of Duke students post-graduation.
Former students thanked Fleishman for his contributions to their careers or the connections he helped them forge. Others praised him for his detailed feedback on their papers, quick to comment on his hatred of split infinitives.
“[KAjok] really stemmed from our personal experiences,” said Sebin Jeon, Trinity ‘23, co-founder and former co-president of KAjok. “There [were] so many Korean Americans scattered across Duke’s campus … but [we didn’t have] the opportunity to actually engage with them about our Korean American identity.”
Initially, it saw success. Within its first year, DMA distributed $46,546.07 to its community. After a series of forced closures starting in 2021, the group announced that it would go on an indefinite hiatus in October 2022, two years after its founding in 2020.
The C1 doors opened to a bright yellow LDOC sign surrounded by a crowd of students posing for pictures. Friends strolled about with LocoPops and tote bags. In front of Few Quad, black “Duke University” banners added the final touches to the LDOC concert stage.
Some chapters from these Duke-affiliated councils noted financial support and programming convenience as being the main reasons they remain affiliated. They also mentioned that they serve a different role for Duke students than the disaffiliated Greek chapters. At the same time, some haven’t felt that Duke administrators are as enthusiastic about working with them under QuadEx as they claim.
"[The provost] is just a multifaceted, really complex leadership opportunity. And that appeals to me. That seems like the next stage, the next challenge of my career to sort of elevate to that level. And it's wonderful," Gallimore said.
Each school’s challenges, traditions and student reception — from the fanfare of Harvard’s Housing Day to dorm t-shirts made by a Yale student — provide a glimpse into what QuadEx could look like at Duke in four, 30 and 60 years down the line.
Over the last year and a half, most of the work at the Center for Documentary Studies, a nonprofit affiliate of Duke that is nationally renowned, has come to a halt. Now the future of the center remains uncertain as Duke administrators consider, among other things, what the “appropriate relationship” should be between the University and the center moving forward.

Even the most critical of first-years agreed that’s how residential dorms’ common spaces created both intra- and inter-dorm communities, but several pointed out that the impact of QuadEx depended more on dorms’ spaces and their utilities, not their proximity.
