DeVos and the legacy of assault on campus

Instead of focusing on the repeal of Obama era advancements, there needs to be be a concerted effort to work on re-imagining the process to strip the university of its undue power and to bring a more just treatment of sexual assault cases.

Historicizing North Korea

There should be no cheering for a nuclear war where its innocent civilians will suffer the most. When speaking on foreign policy tactics, it remains unproductive and dishonest to conflate the people of a nation with their political leaders.

Diversity beyond percentages

Regardless of how much progress is being made in comparison to other schools across the country, there is still a need to focus on continuously creating new ways of supporting underrepresented students for their four years on campus.

Duking it out over college rankings

U.S News & World Report released its annual list of the so called “Best Colleges” in the country last Monday night, and since then, the results have been circulating across campus. Much to the surprise of current Blue Devils and Alumni alike, the new 2018 rankings placed Duke at 9th best in the national universities category, one spot lower than last year’s score of 8th.

Remember the 11th of September

While we listen to the annual roll call of the lives lost, we should be cognizant about the effects that time has had on our memories and attachments to 9/11. We should reflect on how this day changed our country, New York, and our individual lives.

Always a Blue Devil

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and other loved ones of Bobby Menges, Michael Doherty, Jeff Burke, Crystal Sollinger, Kris Harrison and the patient abroad the LifeFlight. May they rest in peace, and may the music they brought to our campus and to the lives of those around them continue to resound.

Between housing and home

For resident assistants, the challenge becomes facilitating connections in communities brought together by random housing assignment through frequent, intentional programming and predictable visibility in the dorms.

DACA beyond the numbers

Immigrants at Duke and around the country deserve compassion and protection because they’re humans, not because of how many degrees they hold or how many hours they’ve committed to research.

Breaking bread on West

At a university as diverse as this one, food has the power to bring people closer together, and the act of preparing food in a domestic setting is a grounding and centering one. Duke is our home, and what we eat is just as important as what we study. Please give us pots and pans.

Antifa fact check

Ultimately, dragging down and demonizing Antifa is not the pathway to effectively fighting white supremacy. Instead, nuanced criticisms and productive conversations on how to best serve the needs of those who need it the most, while working towards mobilizing one’s community, represent the keys to a future free of fascism or fear.

To run, or not to run

Historically, DSG has also had a considerable issue with attendance, along with a serious problem in diversity that fails to fully represent Duke’s multifaceted student body.

Nowhere to run to, nowhere to hide

As students finally settle back into the academic year, it seems that the Duke bubble — the seemingly impervious metaphysical barrier that prevents the many problems of the troubled outside world from disturbing the utopian tranquility of the Gothic Wonderland — has yet again set the mood of campus life. However, it would behoove us to remember that the lives of our fellow students do not begin or end within the walls of Duke. It is specifically pertinent to regard the experiences of students of color, who may be faced with assimilating back into campus life after a racially charged and emotionally taxing summer.

Preparing for post-Harvey

Rather than simply holding press conferences once a disaster strikes, it is time we develop a plan for systematically addressing infrastructure and natural disaster preparedness deficits at the national level.

New year, new wages

Often, Duke students view integral staff as cogs of the greater Duke machine rather than as people with the same basic needs as anyone else. While random acts of kindness from students like cakes or cards are appreciated, they aren’t enough to balance out financial precariousness among workers on campus

An unpardonable pardon

Despite the objections from political figures like Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, Senator John McCain and Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton, President Donald Trump officially fulfilled his controversial promise to pardon America’s most infamous sheriff, Joe Arpaio.
