Fundamentally, the liberal arts must be, in a word, ‘liberal’—that is characterized by freedom of choice.
Whether or not Duke has been looking for a solution to sexual assault on campus, SHAPE has done the heavy lifting for them.
Students are unaware of the administrators that have considerable influence on their daily lives, and as a result, workers are forced to face student concerns.
It is time for our student government to enact reasonable guidelines that establish sound definitions of free speech and outline appropriate funding standards for speakers.
Take time to find comfort in the communities that have been built and strengthened throughout the year.
Students come to Duke because of the peer connections, interdisciplinary studies and school culture, not only for the classes.
The Duke Administration already feels that we students are too unqualified and biased to select the next Young Trustee by coming together, so let’s prove them wrong by uniting against injustice and unfairness when we see it.
Administrators should consult those affected by their decisions – namely Duke students.
It is more important than ever to mobilize the student body to engage in their communities with the same ferocity with which they post on social media.
Instead of framing new technologies solely as tools to get through the pandemic, Duke can apply these new strategies to make education more accessible to its student body.
Combining two contradictory policies undermines both approaches in the process. Moving forward, it is up to administrative forces to decide which COVID-19 policies are considered effective, and how resources can be used to best support the Durham community and academic life here at Duke.
The main question remains: Is creating new programs the most efficient way to expose students to new fields and educate future leaders? Not necessarily. While we would all like to have hundreds of majors, minors and certificates to choose from, creating efficient programming demands time and funding from Duke’s faculty and administration.
While QuadEx will work to build new long lasting communities, we cannot allow it to limit our ability to form friendships and bonds outside of our quad.
Black lives matter.
Valeria has demonstrated an ambitious and expansive vision in which she deeply desires a connection with a diverse range of student groups across campus and proactive initiatives.
In tandem with calling out the atrocious behaviors of controversial speakers, we are calling on all members of the Duke community to hold the root of the problem accountable.
To exclusively value individual achievement and to dismiss the role that support networks and larger structures have played in that achievement breeds narcissism and minimizes harm.
This is not the first time we’ve seen the conflation of diseased bodies with political bodies—HIV/AIDS and Ebola were also racialized diseases that resulted in calls for travel bans.
