On a warm fall day in Waco, Texas, senior Ellie Coleman and freshman Irina Balus stepped onto the court at the Hurd Tennis Center for the quarterfinals of the NCAA Singles Championship. The duo had made it the farthest out of any Duke women’s double’s team in six years and remained the only players left in the singles or doubles section of the tournament. Their opponents were Alicia Dudeney and Rachel Gailis of Florida — a tough duo, especially considering that Gailis was ranked No. 7 in singles play coming into the preseason.

Cellist David Finckel and pianist Wu Han visited Durham and the Baldwin Auditorium Nov. 18 for the second time in as many years. This performance was unique in its choice of pieces. The duet performed a selection of Beethoven's works — the first pieces of Beethoven that Baldwin Auditorium had heard since 2020, the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth.

I enjoy the Duke libraries (controversial, I know). It is the perfect locale to glimpse into the lives of Duke students and exemplifies much of what we seek from learning and being here. From the endless scribbles on the Edge whiteboards to the little doodles on the Perkins work desks, all demonstrate how we interact with academic spaces and leave our mark on them.

Social media has been quietly rotting my brain for the past seven years. At first, it was fun. Instagram was non-malicious and non-insidious. It was just a fun way to update my friends on my most recent haircut, a great breakfast sandwich or a particularly cute picture of my dog. But more recently, it has infiltrated the way I think about myself and the way I live my life. Instagram has forcibly turned me into a voyeur of my own reality. So, I deleted it.

Director Jacques Audiard’s film “Emilia Pérez” was released on Netflix Nov. 13. Audiard, who is French, has become “known for hard-hitting crime dramas.” “Emilia Pérez” does not match with the other works in his repertoire, as a Spanish-language crime musical with some elements of comedy. If that collection of adjectives was not intriguing enough, the movie is also described as “audacious” and as unfolding “through a fever dream of original songs and dance.” Combine these descriptions with the film’s strong LGBTQ+ themes, and, as strange as it seems, you get the most accurate explanation of the film you can find.

After a tough stretch on the road, Duke volleyball was finally back at home greeted by a warm tribute; a banner reading “We Love Our Seniors” hung above the bench. The Blue Devils, energized by the recognition of their senior class, took the court with pride.

When the Blue Devils last battled the Toreros, in August in San Diego, they tied the game 2-2. After that match — the first of the season — Duke surged from No. 20 in the country to No. 2, wrapping up its regular season in a 10-game undefeated streak, the last five all wins. San Diego also soared: The Toreros went 7-1 in the WCC and hold a 7-0 road record. They arrived in Durham hot off a 1-0 win to take UC Davis out of the Big Dance.
