Overview: Boston College has been on the upswing ever since head coach Earl Grant came into the picture. Last year, in Grant’s second season, the Eagles won nine ACC games in regular season play — their most since 2011. And, the team’s away game winnings were the highest it has had since 2009. In the ACC tournament, it fell to North Carolina in the second round, a hard-wall contender that Boston College just couldn’t push past.

Offensively, the Eagles struggled last year, in part due to injuries sustained by their strongest offensive players. Senior forward Quinten Post, the team’s top scorer, was injured for the first half of the season, making for a rocky start for Boston College. Freshman guard Donald Hand Jr. only played two games before suffering a season-ending knee injury. The freshman recruit was a four-star scorer.

Now that Post and Hand are back in full-time play this season, and there is a class of high-scoring recruits incoming, things could be looking up even more for the Eagles this year. They need to become more of a powerhouse offensively if they want to push further than last year. With the departure of Makai Ashton-Langford, the team’s second leading scorer last year, it is possible that the Eagles’ upward trend could slow. Ashton-Langford’s gap cannot simply be bridged by members of the team, it needs to be extended in order for Boston College to continue down the path to success.

Team ceiling: If last year’s injured players with strong offensive skill are able to step into play for the whole season, and new recruits add to the Eagles’ overall offensive strength, a perfect storm brews for Earl Grant to push the team further towards the NCAA tournament this year.

Team floor: Boston College’s groove fizzles out. The Ashton-Langford-sized hole is too big to fully close, and the team’s fate is the same. The Eagles lose out on a title again this year.
