Duke Student Government senators approved Student Organization Funding Committee funding as well as new election bylaws, rules and procedures and heard a closed-session presentation during its Wednesday meeting — its first since Nov. 20.
SOFC updates
The following SOFC funding requests were approved asynchronously Monday after the previous two DSG meetings were cancelled due to limited legislation and severe weather, respectively.
Pitchforks: $2,062.50 funded in full to cover space rental costs for The Pitchforks' x DUI Valentine's Show.
Miracle at Duke: $3,492.50 funded in full to cover space rental costs for its All Star Talent Show.
Black Student Alliance: $1,885.56 out of its requested $1,894.40 to cover catering costs and laser tag kits for its “East Campus Backyard” event. Napkins were removed from the allocation after being deemed “unnecessary and not environmentally friendly.”
Muslim Student Association: $2,175 out of its requested $4,119.86 to cover travel and lodging costs and honoraria for three guest speakers at its “Syria: Academic Perspectives” panel, with cuts made to meet SOFC allocation guidelines.
Duke Jewish Student Union: $4,030 out of its requested $4,330 to cover catering, a DJ and event material costs for its Bnai Mitzvah, with cuts made due to funding received from other sources.
Duke MMA: $5,000 out of its requested $5,700 to cover travel and training session costs for its “Training at United Thai Boxing & MMA” event, with cuts made to Uber allocations to fit SOFC’s allocation guidelines.
Duke Justice Project: $2,621 out of its requested $5,700 to cover space rental and event material costs for its “Reentry Simulation” event, with funds being cut to only cover “necessary expenses.”
Senators approved the following SOFC legislation during DSG’s Wednesday meeting:
Amnesty International Duke Chapter: $3,570 out of a requested $4,395 to cover student travel and lodging for their annual meeting.
Asian Student Association: $1,188.63 out of its requested $1,616 to cover catering costs for their “Converge” performing arts showcase.
TEDxDuke: $5,230.81 out of its requested $11,828 to cover catering, guest speaker and space rental costs for the TedxDuke 2025 Conference on Feb. 16, with cuts made to the funding for a videographer.
Committee updates
Junior Mariam Gulamhusein, vice president of the services and sustainability committee, gave updates on the Krzyzewskiville project, where committee members handed out 500 blue bags with tenting supplies at the beginning of the tenting season, as well as the tenting supply directive, through which the committee is collecting unwanted tenting supplies to be donated to the Durham community.
Sophomore Angela Xiong, vice president of the equity and outreach committee announced that it is continuing to assist in expanding care options for students through Duke Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), including vouchers for students to receive off-campus mental health care. Other updates included efforts to provide student groups with a free Canva subscription as well as host international students and LGBTQ+ awareness and accessibility initiatives.
Junior Tara Singh, vice president of the campus life committee, shared that the completed health care vending machine project will be featured on East Campus by the end of the month. She also said that the water bottle station initiative is underway and will be implemented either at the end of the semester or over the summer.
Senior Alessandro Dal Bon, vice president of the academic affairs committee, discussed the committee’s work in creating AI guidelines for students, as well as templates for common student tasks, including requesting transfer credit. These templates will be released on the new DSG website tomorrow.
Sophomore Yash Sharma, vice president of the Durham and community affairs committee, announced that the Duke Center for Community Engagement will be opening Feb. 5.

Other business
Attorney General Chloe Decker, a senior, presented the updated DSG Election Bylaw and election rules and procedures for approval, which she shared contained no major changes except for “some specific wording changes.”
A special guest presentation was given to senators by Kevin D’Arco, senior associate dean of international students, in a closed session.
