They say the devil is in the details. But in Durham, the Blue Devils are in the details — and the numbers:
52.6
The talent on the Duke men’s basketball roster has always been formidable, but the rise that the Blue Devils are riding is downright scary. Duke shot 52.6% from the field Saturday afternoon against Boston College, marking its seventh straight game shooting over .500. Freshman forward Cooper Flagg shone bright in front of a friendly crowd, scoring 28 points on a 9-of-14 clip from the field. The young superstar has unsurprisingly led the Blue Devils’ surge on offense, but his supporting cast has been taking off — junior guard Tyrese Proctor contributed 20 points against the Eagles. The Sydney native notched a season high and has scored in double-digits in five of his last seven games.
12
Duke women’s basketball’s Delaney Thomas pitched in 12 points and 10 rebounds in a resounding victory against Stanford Sunday afternoon. Thomas has taken a leap in her second season on the floor for the Blue Devils, shooting 80% from the field in her last two games and averaging more than seven points per game this season. The Charles Town, W. Va., native stepped into a crucial role in head coach Kara Lawson’s frontcourt in the absence of a true center, and Duke has relied on her as an integral piece of its defense and a dependable option on the offensive end. Thomas will be a key player to watch as the pressure builds for the rest of the season.
47.65
Junior Tatum Wall shattered the 100-yard freestyle school record in a victory for Duke women’s swim and dive against Georgia Tech. With a finish of 47.65 seconds, Wall notched a personal best and a time that is .55 seconds short of the NCAA cut, which would make her eligible to swim the event at the national championship meet in March. She is a key piece in a surging team that was ranked No. 20 by the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America at the end of last year. The new accolade is Wall’s first as an individual; she has previously written her name in the Duke record books as a part of the 800-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard IM relays.
15
Freshman Blue Devil men’s basketball center Khaman Maluach snagged a season-high 15 boards in a matchup with Miami, with a performance that could indicate how the remainder of the conference schedule plays out for Duke. The Blue Devils played their first full game Tuesday without backup center Maliq Brown, who exited the contest against Notre Dame with an injury and is expected to miss extended time. Despite starting throughout the season, Maluach will undoubtedly step into a larger role in head coach Jon Scheyer’s rotation with the older, more experienced Brown out.
