For the second straight season, the Blue Devils' starting quarterback is moving on.
Duke football's Maalik Murphy is entering the transfer portal, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel. According to the report, Murphy will not play in Duke's TaxSlayer Gator Bowl against Ole Miss Jan. 2, and he will have two years of eligibility remaining.
Murphy posted on X Dec. 11 confirming the move.
"Blue Devil Nation, thank you for this amazing chapter in my life. It was one I can always remember and learn from. Thank you for your love and support throughout the highs and lows this season, it’s been a pleasure playing in Wally Wade," read his post.
On Dec. 19, Murphy announced his commitment to Oregon State.
Murphy transferred to Durham from Texas, where he started two games in relief for Quinn Ewers. He was a highly-touted prospect out of the portal, and he committed to the Blue Devils last December.
"I've got a ton of respect for Maalik Murphy. Our story as a program, it doesn't happen this way without Maalik," head coach Manny Diaz said Tuesday morning. "He's been everything we could have hoped for and more in his time with us, so I'm excited for him and for his future, and I'm glad that we were part of each other's story."
The signal caller broke the program record for touchdowns in a single season with 26, and threw for 2,933 yards on the year. The Inglewood, Calif., native helped lead Duke to a 9-3 record, most recently completing a last-second touchdown throw in the Blue Devils' regular-season finale against Wake Forest. He also struggled at times with consistency, recording 12 interceptions and a 60.3% completion percentage.
Initially, it seemed as though Grayson Loftis and Henry Belin IV, who both earned starts last season, would likely compete for the starting spot against the Rebels. However, Loftis also reportedly will follow Murphy into the portal, according to an X post from On3.
