The Chronicle’s guide to spending winter break in Durham

If you’re staying on-campus over winter break, here’s a look at some fun ways to spend your holidays and how certain Duke facilities will operate over the coming weeks.

Over the break, Duke men’s basketball will face off against Queens University of Charlotte and Syracuse University, and Duke women’s basketball will play the University of Toledo, Coppin State University and Boston College. Students can also cheer on Duke wrestling as it competes against The Citadel and Appalachian State University over break.

Drive 17 minutes off campus to The Streets at Southpoint for your next shopping spree or to try a new restaurant. You can also check out the AMC Southpoint Movie Theater and watch a movie in their heated reclining chairs.

The Durham Winter Farmers Market is open every Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. Just about a 20-minute walk from East Campus at 501 Foster Street, the farmers market has a wide variety of vendors that sell locally grown and crafted products, including bakeries, flowers, photography, cheeses, fresh produce, pottery, clothing and more.

The atmosphere in PNC Arena in Raleigh during a Carolina Hurricanes game is one you won’t forget. If you love sporting events, check out one of many Canes games over winter break, just 30 minutes away from campus.

For a fun way to ring in the new year, stop by WRAL First Night Raleigh. Festivities, including various performances and activities, will start at 2 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and continue throughout the night across multiple downtown Raleigh venues. Tickets are $16 for adults.

On-campus resources

From Dec. 19 to 22, many of Duke Dining’s vendors will remain open at limited hours. Starting Dec. 22, all dining vendors will be closed until Jan. 2. For the first-years staying on East Campus, Marketplace and Trinity Cafe will be closed from Dec. 19 to Jan. 2.

Perkins, Bostock and Lilly Libraries begin running on modified hours on Dec. 18, and all three will close from Dec. 22 to Jan. 1.
