Christoph Guttentag, dean of undergraduate admissions, addresses the Class of 2022.

Dean of Undergraduate Admissions Christoph Guttentag was reappointed for another five-year term until 2028, according to a Wednesday announcement by Interim Provost Jennifer Francis.

Guttentag was named director of Duke’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions in 1992 and was first named dean of undergraduate admissions in 2006. He will begin his new term as dean on July 1, per the announcement.

“I look forward to continuing to serve the Duke community,” Guttentag said in the release. “The coming years will present us with both challenges and opportunities, and Duke is uniquely prepared to respond to both. It’s an honor to be able to lead this talented team of admissions staff in representing Duke and creating a student body that represents the university’s values and aspirations.”

Over his past term, Guttentag has seen applications for undergraduate admission increase significantly, with 49,469 total applicants for the Class of 2027. Undergraduate admissions have also become more competitive, with record-low acceptance rates for the Class of 2025 and the second-lowest overall acceptance rates in Duke history for the Class of 2027.

The release also referenced Guttentag’s efforts to increase the undergraduate body’s socioeconomic diversity and adjust admissions requirements during the COVID-19 pandemic, including announcing the University’s test-optional admissions policy in 2020.

Throughout Guttentag’s terms as dean of undergraduate admissions, Duke has also made gradual steps in increasing its undergraduate body’s racial diversity

On Thursday, President Vincent Price sent a message to the Duke community reaffirming Duke’s commitment to “inclusive excellence” in light of upcoming decisions for two Supreme Court cases against Harvard University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that will decide the future of race-based affirmative action in higher education.
