The Blue Devils will be without one of their top freshmen for Saturday's game against Georgia Tech, head coach Jon Scheyer said in his Thursday press conference.
Freshman forward Dariq Whitehead suffered a lower left leg injury during Duke’s Monday evening loss on the road against Virginia Tech. Whitehead was putting together one of his better performances of the season with 10 points prior to exiting the contest early in the second half.
Whitehead had an MRI that revealed no structural damage. While the exact time table for Whitehead's return is unclear, Scheyer said the injury, which he characterized as a strain, is not season-ending.
“We want to take it slow, be cautious,” Scheyer said.
This is Whitehead’s second stint of missed time due to injury this season. The New Jersey native missed the first three games after undergoing surgery Aug. 30 to repair a fractured right foot. He made his debut Nov. 18 against Delaware and scored six points.
Whitehead is averaging 8.4 points and 2.3 rebounds and was projected as a lottery pick in the 2023 NBA Draft prior to this season.
