On Monday, an article was published in the Recess section promoting a speaker event hosted by the Duke Medical Ethics Journal and Asian American Alliance.
The writer of the story is a co-president of the Duke Medical Ethics Journal and has been heavily involved in promoting the event. The Chronicle does not allow staff members to cover anything about clubs and organizations of which they are a member. The Recess editor was not aware of the writer’s conflict of interest, which led to the story’s publication.
Because of these issues—a writer using The Chronicle to promote an event they were hosting with their organization—the article was removed from The Chronicle’s website. Going forward, members of Chronicle staff will be reminded of our conflict of interest policy to prevent further complications.
