Duke in the NBA: Jayson Tatum shines while Kyrie Irving flails

Jayson Tatum is leading the Celtics in points and rebounds so far.

Two weeks into the NBA season, the Blue Zone checks in with some former Blue Devils.

Jayson Tatum, Boston Celtics

After his near Rookie of the Year win last season, Tatum is playing even better than last season. Starting in all 6 games for the Celtics this season, the forward is leading the title-contending Celtics in both points and rebounds, dismissing any rumors of a sophomore slump.

Jabari Parker, Chicago Bulls

Following a disappointing stint with the Milwaukee Bucks, Parker joined his hometown Bulls in the offseason, playing behind Wendell Carter. He is averaging 15.9 points per game and is an integral part of the Chicago offense.

Grayson Allen, Utah Jazz

Former Duke superstar has joined the Jazz, appearing in 4 games thus far. In limited minutes, Allen is averaging 5.5 points on an efficient 54 percent from the field.

Marvin Bagley III, Sacramento Kings

The second overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft is off to a quick start in the NBA. He has averaged 23.3 minutes a game while averaging 12.7 points in that start. The efficient big man has been a large part in the Kings’ solid 4-3 start.

Wendell Carter Jr., Chicago Bulls

During his rookie season, Carter Jr. has started all 7 games for them and is averaging just under 9 points per game. He notched a double-double against the Hawks, and remains a dark horse candidate for the Rookie of the Year.

Quinn Cook,Golden State Warriors

Quinn Cook has picked up his same complimentary role on the reigning champions the Golden State Warriors this season. Although in a small sample size, Cook is not doing well from beyond the arc, converting on just 33.3 percent of his looks from outside.

Kyrie Irving, Boston Celtics

Coming off a career year, Irving has been ice cold for the Celtics, hitting only 39.1 percent of his field goals, including a pathetic 24.1 3-point percentage. Irving is being overshadowed by another Duke product in Tatum.

JJ Redick, Philadelphia 76ers

Though he may not be a starter on the 76ers anymore, his scoring average so far this season has actually gone up. He is averaging nearly 20 points per game and has played in all of the 76ers games this season. Though Redick has been playing great this season, the 76ers are entirely mediocre thus far.
