Duke in the NFL: Week 4

Ross Cockrell has struggled to solidify himself on the New York Giants defense.

As the NFL season moves along, The Blue Zone takes a look at how some former Blue Devils in the NFL performed in Week 4.

Jamison Crowder, WR, Washington

Despite dealing with a hamstring injuring during the week, Crowder played in Washington’s 29-20 defeat at the hands of the Kansas City Chiefs. Crowder only had one reception on the day for a disappointing -7 yards and also fumbled on the play. He has yet to find the success he has had in past seasons and at Duke and will need to pick up his play going forward. Crowder will hope to do just that against an average San Francisco defense that has given up 240.3 yards per game.

Vincent Rey, LB, Cincinnati Bengals

After having strong weeks to start the season, Rey fell off a bit in week 4, totaling only two tackles, both assisted, in a 31-7 blowout win over the continually disappointing Cleveland Browns. Hopefully, Rey rediscovers  his earlier form against a Bills team that possesses weapons like explosive running back LeSean McCoy. Look for Rey to up his tackle numbers and lead the defense again in the coming weeks.

Laken Tomlinson, LG, San Francisco 49ers

After being traded from the Detroit Lions early in the preseason, Tomlinson has solidified himself as the starting left guard for the 49ers, playing well in his three starts since earning the job. The 49ers offense did not play well this week with only 305 yards of offense in a tough overtime loss to the Cardinals. Quarterback Brian Hoyer was sacked three times and hit 10 times so the line is looking to improve for their next game against Washington.

Ross Cockrell, CB, New York Giants

After getting his first career start with Giants earlier this year, Cockrell did not perform this week putting up no stats. The Giants fell 25-23 to Tampa Bay and now sit at a shocking 0-4 on the season when much was expected of them entering the year. The Giants and Cockrell will look to bounce back next week against the Chargers back home in New York.

Jeremy Cash, LB, Carolina Panthers

On Tuesday, Cash and the Panthers reached an injury settlement regarding his placement on the injured reserve. After missing the last two weeks of play, Cash has been released from the Panthers and is now eligible to sign with any team and hopefully begin to play with them once his health returns.

Lucas Patrick, G, Green Bay Packers

Rookie Lucas Patrick got his first start this past Thursday against the Packers’ bitter rival the Chicago Bears, pulling ahead in the all-time series 95-94-6. The Packers made easy work of the Packers, racking up 35 points on only 260 yards thanks to four Bears turnovers throughout the game. Patrick hopes to continue to start for a Packers team that has been hit hard with injuries already this season and looks forward to playing against the Dallas Cowboys this Sunday.

Thomas Hennessy, LS, New York Jets

The Duke in the NFL star of the week was Thomas Hennessy after the Jets won 23-20 in overtime over the Jacksonville Jaguars on a game winning field goal. Hennessy performed well, but the field goal off one of his snaps went wide as the team went three for four on field goals for the day. It doesn’t matter that they missed the field goal, however because the Jets came up clutch when it mattered and hope to carry the motivation forward against the Browns in a game where offense should come easily.
