Game Breakdown: A prototypical scorer and shooting guard, Greenwell brings a balanced set of skills to the Blue Devils’ backcourt. One of Duke’s “Splash Sisters,” Greenwell ranks eighth in progran history in 3-point field goals made after just two seasons, and she shot better than 40 percent from beyond the arc last season. She leads all returning scorers and is the only returning Blue Devil to average double-digit points last season.
The Owensboro, Ky., native has the invaluable ability to play all three guard positions, though she is most naturally a shooting guard. The 2015-16 second-team All-ACC selection excels at making plays off the dribble, driving into the paint to take jumpers or creating space on the perimeter. A pure shooter, she also ranked second on the team in free-throw percentage last season. Greenwell has also proven she can make plays on defense in space, leading the team in steals with 45 last season. But Greenwell did average 2.8 turnovers per game, a problem that plagued the entire Duke team.
Role on team: After leading scorer and forward Azura Stevens’ transfer to Connecticut, the offense will become more up-tempo than in recent years to revolve around Greenwell and the Blue Devils’ trio of talented guards. Along with transfer guard Lexie Brown, Greenwell will be asked to shoulder the bulk of the load on offense for the Blue Devils.
With Greenwell, Brown and improved sophomore Kyra Lambert in the backcourt—three players who can play point guard—Duke could become even better from beyond the arc this season. Greenwell and the Blue Devils could present matchup problems for teams that lack the athleticism and skill to keep up with them on defense.
Projected Stats: 18.1 PPG, 6.1 RPG, 2.0 APG, 1.7 SPG
