To the editor:
I'm thrilled to learn that Duke graduate students are working together to form a union. As a member of the Duke Faculty Union, I have experienced firsthand the power of coming together to raise standards on our campus. Within months of our campaign last fall, we started to see the benefits of collective action: everything from longer contract lengths to increased pay. Yet we knew that the administration couldn't give us what we really needed: a voice and a seat at the table. That's why we stuck together, and didn't stop until we voted overwhelmingly to form our union. I know that graduate student workers can prevail in organizing their union too, and they can count on my support every step of the way. Together, we can make Duke a better place to teach, conduct research and learn.
