Ferry served as the Hawks GM from 2012-2015 before stepping down after taking an indefinite leave of absence. The former National Player of the Year and All-American from 1985-1989 at Duke made controversial comments about another former Blue Devil. Luol Deng, when Deng was a prospective free agent, saying the Sudan native "has a little African in him."
Ferry took the leave of absence after the comments, but ESPN reported that he has since informally advised Pelicans general manager Dell Demps.
Before joining the Hawks, Ferry served as general manager of the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2005 to 2010 and as vice president of basketball operations for the San Antonio Spurs.
