Two perfect brackets remain after Thursday's NCAA tournament action

Two brackets remain perfect in The Chronicle's bracket challenge after a chaotic first day of the NCAA tournament.

Of the 284 entered brackets, just two correctly selected the winner of all 16 first-round games Thursday, which included seven victories by lower seeds. Six users missed just one pick.

Overall, Duke was selected as the national champion in 50 of the 284 brackets, or 20.5 percent, the third-most popular choice behind Kansas and Michigan State. For comparison, of the 13.02 million brackets filled out for ESPN's Tournament Challenge, just 2.2 percent of users had the Blue Devils repeating as champions in Houston—the ninth-most popular pick.

Below are the most popular national champion selections from this year's Chronicle bracket pool:

1. Kansas (27.8 percent)

2. Michigan State (25.1 percent)

3. Duke (20.5 percent)

4. North Carolina (8.9 percent)

5. Virginia (5.8 percent)

6. Oklahoma (4.6 percent)

7. Kentucky (1.9 percent)

8. Oregon (1.2 percent)

Iowa State, West Virginia and Maryland each received two selections. Baylor, Miami, Wichita State, Villanova and Indiana were all chosen to cut down the nets in one bracket.
