After meeting the three Young Trustee finalists and hearing their visions for Duke’s campus, we were thrilled to see all candidates exude so much passion and interest in the position. After careful deliberation, the Asian Students Association has chosen to endorse Jamal Edwards for Young Trustee. While each finalist has an extensive background of commitments and experiences, we believe that Edwards’ various engagements both on and off-campus will make him best suited for the position.
The Young Trustee should be able to serve the wide array of interests and identities of the Duke undergraduate student body, and Jamal has been a part of numerous organizations and campus groups that embody the diversity on our campus. His roles as a first-year class president, as an athlete, as a resident assistant and as former president of the Black Student Alliance have equipped him with the experiences and abilities to understand a wide array of student experiences, and his position as a Robertson Scholar truly sets him apart in terms of academic involvement. Jamal prioritizes the desire to form a more inclusive and unified student body and best understands how to actualize Duke’s mission of diversity on our campus.
Furthermore, Jamal has significant experience with administration and leadership on campus, thus being able to conduct himself professionally and intelligently while sitting on the Board of Trustees. He is an influential public speaker who understands the distinction between pushing for ideas on his agenda and being a voice for undergraduates, and his familiarity with this role will allow him to be a respected and productive member among the other trustees.
ASA believes that Jamal Edwards will have the most positive and influential impact as the Young Trustee, and we support his visions and ideals for our student body. His desire and dedication to make Duke a better place are truly remarkable, and we are excited to offer our endorsement for his candidacy.
