The Duke College Republicans are pleased to lend their support to Tucker Albert in the DSG election. With DCR being a political group, our endorsement can call a candidate's politics into question—as any student here knows, though, the DSG's operations are scarcely political. Ideology irrelevant then, we asked which candidate put forward more concrete proposals and promised an energetic effort to see them pass.
Campuses introduced emergency telephones (“Blue Lights”) in the 1970s and ‘80s—the notion is that you should be able to see one wherever you are to get help fast. Tucker Albert has a preliminary download designed for a smart-phone, Mobile BlueLight, which promises to bring the system into the age of an ever-present internet; clearly, this will bring help all the faster. His having such a design ready so soon impresses us, and foretells a promising term for Albert.
In the past year, Albert also worked at the forefront of the movement to start DevilsGate. Disappointed in the bland, little-attended event they had seen the year before, Albert and other members of the DSG worked hard to get this up and running. In our view, this proves he has the resourcefulness and energy to lead a project through abundant red tape.
No one in this election needs to worry about politics as we see them in the nation. Instead, we must ask ourselves: What will the candidate make of a term leading the student government. The DCR is confident Albert will not disappoint Duke’s undergraduates.
