Every year, the arts offer up a wealth of awesome culture that is both fun and edifying. 2014 was no exception. Here are some things that happened in 2014 for which Recess is thankful.
- Taylor Swift’s excellent, ear-wormy and hater-defying new album 1989
- Reading Donna Tartt’s The Goldfinch on hot summer days outside
- True Detective for revitalizing the detective show
- The McConnaisance in general. Seriously, how good was Matthew McConaughey’s 2014? With True Detective, Interstellar and his Oscar-winning turn in Dallas Buyers Club, he dominated the cultural conversation.
- McConaughey’s laughable Lincoln commercials for reminding us that nobody is perfect
- The unfiltered whim and nostalgia of The Lego Movie
- Community being saved YET AGAIN!
- FKA Twigs’ dark, sensual LP1 and Tinashe’s Aquarius injecting a much-needed dose of ingenuity to the crowded “indie R&B” field
- Seeing a sweet, live concert in Novi Sad, Serbia with Disclosure, Gloria Gaynor, Damon Albarn, Skrillex and the incomparable Stromae
- Re-watching Mean Girls every year on October 3rd. It never gets old.
- The Season Four revitalization of New Girl after a messy and unfocused Season Three.
- Spike Jonze’s Internet-age love letter, Her. It’s a devastatingly emotional movie that made me cry.
- Scarlett Johansson and Jennifer Lawrence make this a fantastic year for action heroines. Johansson played Black Widow in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and the eponymous Lucy, while Lawrence, of course, played Katniss Everdeen and Mystique.
- Too Many Cooks. Enough said.
- Groot and all of his Groot-iness
- Kim Kardashian didn’t break the internet! We can publish this article successfully!
