The Chronicle's Top 10: Construction begins on Wallace Wade Stadium, other facilities

From the field to the court, the Blue Devils provided fans and media members alike with plenty of memorable moments. With 2014 coming to a close, The Chronicle is taking look back on the year's biggest stories. Coming in at No. 3 on our list: the construction taking place at Wallace Wade Stadium, Koskinen Stadium and even Cameron Indoor Stadium.

After keeping its old-school feel for the past 85 years, a renewed Duke football program needed more up-to-date facilities, and now it will have them.

Wallace Wade Stadium and the surrounding area is currently undergoing a two-year facelift project that will cost approximately $100 million. The official work got underway Monday, Dec. 1, just two days after the Blue Devils' 41-21 win against Wake Forest.

Duke is partnering with Beck for the project, which will begin with the lowering of the field and will also include the removal of the track, lowering of the stands, installation of a new scoreboard in the south end zone and replacement of the Finch-Yeager Building—which serves as the Sports Medicine center and press box—with a new, state-of-the-art facility.

The field will be complete by the time the 2015 season kicks off, which means the track will be fully removed and the new seats will have replaced it in order to grant fans a closer game experience.

The Finch-Yeager Building is to be demolished while students are on their winter break, with construction beginning in early January. The new building should be completed by the 2016 season.

The new Williams Track and Kennedy Tower—which will service the track, soccer and lacrosse programs—have come to a near-close in completion.

An addendum to Cameron Indoor Stadium's south entrance also garnered some attention, as Duke intends to turn the extended addition into a gift shop and ticketing area. Duke Director of Athletics and Vice President Kevin White said that work on that project will get underway in April.
