Wipe the cobwebs off your eyes, stretch your skeletal arms to the sky and get ready to embrace the Halloween of your nightmares. For those who have yet to make plans beyond zombied studies, the Editorial Board has come up with a list of things to do at Duke and in Durham to break from the books and pick up the spirit of haunted lore.
-
Why wander into enemy territories of the school-we-shall-not-speak-of if we have the fantastic and revived wanders of the Monster’s Ball on Ninth Street. The party will start past nightfall in Club 9 and will have killer Durham DJs that will have you dancing like the boogieman. Best costume wins $500. You’ll also find “monster balls” scattered around the club that will hold gift certificates to The Parlour, Pizzeria Toro, and Offbeat Music.
- Take a tour of the Crypt found in the Chapel, where every former president who died is buried or memorialized.
- The Duke Children’s Hospital will have its 19th annual Halloween Parade, where patients don’t have to miss the chance to be creepy crawlers or the trick-or-treating galore. Patients, parents, doctors, nurses, hospital staff and parade goers will make their way starting at 2 p.m. starting at the Hospital. Local celebrity sightings are anticipated.
- If your typical walk to Blue Zone doesn’t seem long or creepy enough for you given your festive spirit, don’t fret. Venture off a little deeper into the Blue Zone and you’ll find an array of tombstones waiting for you in the Durham cemeteries. We recommend bringing a sandwich and a picnic blanket to fully absorb the experience.
- Scary movies. This is the classic, and arguably best way to end your Halloween festivities. Grab friends and drag them to your common room. If you have trouble picking a movie, or do not want to forever taint your common room with traumatic memories—Griffith will be screening The Rocky Horror Picture Show Sing-along at midnight and Paranormal Activity on Sunday.
- On East Campus we hope you checked out the horrifying haunted house in Epworth last night. Try to catch the remnants of the mummies and broken mirrors if you walk by. All day on East there will be Pumpkin Carving near the Marketplace for you to take care of the midday Halloween lulls.
- 31 percent off at the Duke Stores! Go, go, go! Perhaps you can buy your costume: a Duke shirt with caution tape wrapped all over to celebrate construction.
- For those who aren’t too keen on Halloween, DUU Annual Events will be kick starting their annual Scav Hunt today. Awaaz also starts tonight, and what better way to spend a holiday than supporting your peers performing?
- If you show up at Chipotle with a costume after 5 o’clock, you get a discount burrito. What a deal.
- There is no better accessory to the perfect Halloween costume than an “I voted” sticker. This may grant you a free donut from Monuts. Go vote.
