Stock Watch: Wilson and McCaffrey on the rise after career days against woeful Jayhawks

The opening bell of the Blue Zone stock exchange has just rung, meaning it's time for our second Stock Watch of the season taking a look at who is rising and falling with their performances for Blue Devil sports teams. Each week The Blue Zone will look at whose stock is on the rise and whose stock has taken a hit from the week in the world of Duke athletics.

Bull Market—Trending Up

  • Shaun Wilson: After rushing for 245 yards and three touchdowns on just 12 carries, Wilson reeled in national and ACC awards in the wake of his speedy performance. The freshman from Charlotte not only was named the National Freshman of the Week by Athlon Sports, but also was named ACC Rookie of the Week and the College Football Performance running back of the week. Wilson's 334 total yards are the second highest in the conference for a running back behind Pittsburgh's James Conner's astronomical 544 yards on the season.
  • Max McCaffrey: On a day when the Kansas defense locked down outside receivers Issac Blakeney and Jamison Crowder, McCaffrey was able to find wide open seams in the middle of the Kansas defense. The junior from Castle Rock, Colo., caught seven passes for 79 yards and added two touchdown catches. All of those stats were career-highs for McCaffrey, who has emerged as a viable third option for quarterback Anthony Boone alongside Blakeney and Crowder.
  • USA Basketball: Although his team hit a few bumps on the way to winning the FIBA World Cup, Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski led Team USA to its fourth consecutive major international basketball title after cruising past Serbia 129-92 in the final. Former Duke guard Kyrie Irving added 26 points and was a perfect 6-of-6 from beyond the arc; he was named the MVP of the event.
  • Duke Field Hockey: Despite losing eight veterans in the offseason, the team doesn't have seemed to miss a beat after appearing in the national title game last November. The Blue Devils have jumped out to a 6-0 start, their best since 1978, while notching victories against four ranked teams in the process.

Bear Market—Trending Down

  • Kansas: The Jayhawks might just be the worst power-five team in the nation. The team has gone 10-40 since an Orange Bowl victory in 2008 and has not won a road game since September 12, 2009. Head coach Charlie Weis thought his team had a great chance to break this streak last weekend in Durham, but poor quarterback play and a lackluster defense sent Kansas home still searching for a coveted road win. Maybe they should travel to play a local high school next time around.
  • Johnell Barnes: The sophomore from Lehigh Acres, Fla. was targeted a number of times in Saturday's game, but only hauled in one pass for five yards. Barnes watched as fellow wide receiver Max McCaffrey had his best game in a Blue Devil uniform and hauled in pass after pass from Boone. Barnes continues to see his role diminish, especially as McCaffrey and Blakeney emerge as solid options alongside the explosive Crowder.
  • ACC Coastal: Although things could have been worse for thee division, they certainly were not perfect. Pittsburgh fell behind 16-0 against a struggling Florida International team before fueling a comeback with panic to win 42-25. Georgia Tech nearly blew a 35-10 first half lead against a pesky Georgia Southern team and needed a touchdown with 23 seconds to play to down the Eagles 42-38. Then there is Virginia Tech. Just a week after a 35-21 win at then-No. 8 Ohio State, the Hokies could not even defend their home field and fell to East Carolina 28-21. The Pirates could wreak even more havoc in the Coastal Division if they can upset 25th-ranked North Carolina in Greenville, N.C., this Saturday.
