Every year student organizations line the East Campus Quad trying to entice freshman to join them. All 300+ of the student-run organizations recognized by the University, as well as student resource centers such as the Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity, are eligible for apply for a spot at the fair. This year's Activities Fair, which was sponsored by Launch and took place Friday, was attended by approximately 250 organizations, according to an estimation by Launch event programmer and junior Brooks Sime.
Standing out can be hard in a crowd that large, so The Chronicle offers this list to highlight a few of the student organizations with the best giveaways.
Best Free Food
Among endless assortments of popsicles and lollipops, these mini challah bread samples by the Freeman Center for Jewish Life were a soft and buttery change of pace.
Best Free Drinks
The Students of the Caribbean Association had an arrangement of authentic Caribbean Sodas including Malta and Kola Champagne. SOCA wins points for having the most refreshing giveaway at the fair.
Biggest Bang For No Bucks
Small Town Records had a wide arrangement of CDs recorded and produced by their studio and label that they were giving away free of charge. STR promotes their music and students get free tunes—everybody wins.
Most Functional Giveaway
Duke Friends of Israel gave away card holders that stick to iPhones for easy Duke Card placement—a helpful solution for the great number of us who have lost our cards upwards of six times.
Honorable Mention: NC Public Interest Research Group, an organization that works along side DSG to help freshmen get registered to vote, handed out wristbands to help students dry off in the 90-degree humidity of the day. Hopefully the weather will cool off by election day.
Most Creative Giveaway
Duke’s chapter of Universities Allied for Essential Medicines gave away M&Ms in pill bottles that represented the amount of medicine that was available in countries all over the world. Tasty and powerful.
