Watch List: Greek and SLG Rush

Greek life, which once had a relatively small presence on campus, has turned into an integral part of everyday student life. Approximately 32 percent of students engage in greek life. Campus now boasts more than 41 different chapters of fraternities and sororities, which are governed by the Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Association, Multicultural Greek Council and the National Pan-Hellenic Council.

Instead of simply being able to live in an SLG's dorm section, students must go through a recruitment process. Rushing is unique to each SLG, but often includes open houses, parties, sports nights and interviews.

Junior Aman Kansal, one of Maxwell House's Rush Chairs, wrote in an email that the recruitment process is an exciting time because Maxwell is like home and its members are like a family.

He noted that he has realized that the process has its flaws.

“In greek and SLG rush... all of Duke joins in on this tradition of trying to label an individual based off of interactions,” Kansal said.

While the recruitment process does have its drawbacks, it is also an important process for many students, as it allows them to find a close-knit group of people they can call family on a large campus.
