X factor: Duke football vs. Virginia

The 4-2 Blue Devils will take on Virginia at 3:30 p.m. at Scott Stadium. Every week throughout the football season, we’ll break down a player on each team who could be the difference-maker in the upcoming contest.

Duke: wide receiver Max McCaffrey

Generic Script

Sophomore wide receiver Max McCaffrey has emerged as a reliable No. 2 option for the Blue Devils this season, catching touchdown passes in his last three contests and reeling in 10 receptions during that span. With the eyes of opposing defense collectively trained toward junior Jamison Crowder, McCaffrey should have more opportunities to flourish following the return of quarterback Anthony Boone. McCaffrey has a chance to have a big game this weekend against Virginia, and should the sophomore break through the Cavalier defense, Duke could be well on its way to its fifth win of the season.

Virginia: running back Kevin Parks

Starting quarterback David Watford has experienced his fair share of ups and downs this season for the Cavaliers, which has placed an increased burden on running back Kevin Parks. Parks has responded by racking up 510 yards and six touchdowns on the season, averaging 4.4 yards per carry. Duke's defense showed improvement in stopping the run against Navy last weekend, but if Parks can gash the Blue Devils for big runs in the early going, it could open up opportunities for Virginia on offense. If Duke can stuff the run game and force Virginia to beat the Blue Devils through the air, it could be a long afternoon for the Cavaliers.
