Mount Kimbie are Dominic Maker and Kai Campos, an English electronic music duo. They played at Mountain Oasis Electronic Music Festival this past weekend, and Recess had a few minutes to chat with them about their dream collaborations and the new guy, Tony.
R: You have an EP coming out tomorrow and now you’re on tour. What are you working on next?
Dominic: It’s been really busy, but we’ve had a little bit of time off, so we’ve been in the studio. Hopefully we’ll do some work in Europe. We want to start writing as soon as possible.
R: Who’s your dream collaboration?
Kai: Dom’s my dream collaboration! [laughs] We don’t really look to do collaborations. We’ve only done one real one, and that was because we knew already that he was great and it was just obvious that we should work with him.
Dominic: We were just talking to Jonwayne and would love to do something with him. He’s very open to getting deeply involved and not just being on something. Otherwise we have a great way of working together independently. You kind of lose the magic when you have to constantly translate your ideas with collaborations.
R: How’s Asheville? Gotten any field recordings or local inspiration?
Dominic: [laughs] No, unfortunately. We’ve just been doing interviews. It’s really nice driving in though; it’s a very scenic place.
R: You’re off to Paris next—are you excited about the rest of your tour? Do you guys ever get sick of each other?
Dominic: We’re both really excited about it. Doing an actual headline tour is great. I think everyone naturally gets sick each other. We do have a new drummer [Tony Kus], so we’re beating him to a pulp—he’s the butt of all our jokes.
