No. 10 Florida State 62, Nevada 7
The Seminoles continued their strong start to the season by thrashing the Wolf Pack in Doak Campbell Stadium. Quarterback Jameis Winston threw for 214 yards and two touchdowns, but it was FSU’s running game that spearheaded the attack. Florida State’s running backs carried the ball 41 times for 377 yards, averaging 9.2 yards per carry and scoring six touchdowns.
Virginia Tech 15, East Carolina 10
Thanks to a dominating defensive performance, Virginia Tech was able to overcome offensive and special teams difficulties to come away with a victory against East Carolina. Logan Thomas threw for two touchdowns, but kicker Cody Journell missed two field goals and an extra point. The Hokies’ defense—led by true freshman Brandon Facyson, who had two interceptions and two tackles—had seven sacks, 11 tackles for loss and three total interceptions against the Pirates.
Louisiana-Monroe 21, Wake Forest 19
Wake Forest was unable to mount a successful comeback against Louisiana-Monroe in Winston-Salem, failing to convert a two-point conversion to send the game into overtime. Demon Deacon quarterback Tanner Price threw for 310 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions, but the Warhawks, led by quarterback Kolton Browning and his 68 pass attempts, came away with the victory, marking the first time in three tries that the Warhawks defeated an ACC team.
Pittsburgh 49, New Mexico 27
After losing their ACC conference-opener to Florida State, Pittsburgh ran away with a victory against New Mexico, scoring touchdowns on six of its first eight possessions. The Panthers’ talented freshman class contributed greatly to the offensive performance, accounting for five touchdowns. Pittsburgh travels to Duke this weekend to face the Blue Devils.
USC 35, Boston College 7
USC jumped out to an early 21-0 lead and did not allow Boston College to score until the 10:40 mark in the fourth quarter in what was not really much of a contest. Cody Kessler threw for 237 yards and two touchdowns, Tre Madden ran for 102 yards and a touchdown and Justin Davis ran for 96 yards and a touchdown to lead the Trojans.
Syracuse 54, Wagner 0
Syracuse scored six times in the first half, including five touchdowns, as the Orange routed Wagner at the Carrier Dome. Quarterback Terrel Hunt threw for 265 yards and three touchdowns, completing 83 percent of his passes to lead the offensive attack. Junior Jarrod West racked up 147 yards receiving and scored a touchdown. Running back Jerome Smith added two touchdowns on the ground.
Maryland 32, Connecticut 21
Quarterback C.J. Brown threw for 277 yards, ran for 122 yards and accounted for two touchdowns to lead his team to victory in Maryland coach Randy Edsall’s return to East Hartford. Stefon Diggs also caught five passes for 110 yards and a touchdown for the Terrapins, who are now 3-0 on the season.
