No. 6 South Carolina and North Carolina kick off their football seasons Thursday in Columbia, S.C., and the game has extra meaning for Gamecock head coach Steve Spurrier.
Spurrier says he's still a "Dukie'' so coaching against UNC will always remain a "special game.''

It's clear Spurrier still loves beating the Tar Heels. (He was no fan of Mack Brown). I'll write more about that in Monday's Observer.

Spurrier coached Duke from 1987-1989 and took the Blue Devils to the 1989 All-American Bowl. Spurrier's last season in Durham was also the last time the Blue Devils earned a share of the ACC title.
Spurrier has openly supported Duke since then, even catching some heat for giving the Blue Devils a 25th-place vote a few times in the Coaches' Poll.
"They hired me twice when I had no job," he said through a spokesman in a 2007 USA Today article about his practice of voting for the Blue Devils.
