Nolan Smith signs contract with Croatian team

Former Blue Devil Nolan Smith will go across the pond and play for Cedevita Zagreb of the Adriatic League for the 2013-14 season. Smith signed a one-year contract with the club, which was released Sunday morning.

Zagreb finished sixth in the Adriatic League last season, posting a 15-11 record, and placed sixth in Group C of the Euroleague, going 2-8.

Generic Script

Smith was selected in the first round, 21st overall, by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 2011 NBA draft, but struggled to find playing time in Portland's deep guard rotation. He appeared in 84 games in two NBA seasons, averaging 3.3 points and 1.2 assists per contest before becoming a free agent in the summer of 2013.

After being added to the Boston Celtics' squad for the Orlando Summer League, Smith scored four early points in the first five minutes of Boston's first contest before suffering a leg injury and missing the rest of the week's action. Smith was expected to receive a training camp invitation from the Celtics later this summer, but instead chose to play overseas.

Smith was a member of Duke's 2010 national championship team and averaged 20.6 points, 5.1 assists and 4.6 rebounds in 2010-11 as a senior.
