Nearly three months ago, Sean Renfree heard his name called at the 2013 NFL draft when the Atlanta Falcons took him with the sixth-to-last selection of the seventh round, making Renfree Duke's first draft pick since 2004.
Renfree agreed to a two-year contract with the Falcons Wednesday, according to reports from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The signal-caller holds Duke's career record for passing accuracy, connecting on 64.7 percent of his throws during his four-year career. Renfree threw for 9,465 yards with 51 touchdowns and 40 interceptions in his collegiate career. He also set a single-season program record during his senior season by completing 67.3 percent of his passes, leading the Blue Devils to a 6-7 finish and their first bowl appearance since 1994.
Renfree suffered a torn pectoral muscle in Duke's 48-34 Belk Bowl loss to Cincinnati and underwent surgery to repair it the following week. He was unable to participate in the NFL Scouting Combine or Duke's Pro Timing Day as he rehabbed from the injury. Renfree has since been cleared to return to football activities.
Atlanta will begin training camp tomorrow at the team's facility in Flowery Branch, Ga. Renfree is expected to compete with second-year quarterback Dominique Davis for the backup quarterback job. Matt Ryan will return as the team's starter under center.
