Duke Vice President and Director of Athletics Kevin White announced Friday that the contract of head men’s lacrosse coach John Danowski has been extended through the 2018 season.
Danowski’s contract extension comes just three weeks after he led the Blue Devils to their second national championship in his seven-year tenure, a 16-10 victory against Syracuse in Philadelphia.
“John’s unparalleled level of achievement, including two national championships in the past four seasons, places him among the elite coaches in college lacrosse, if not in all of college athletics,” White said in a press release.
In his seven years at Duke, Danowski has led the Blue Devils to the NCAA semifinals every year. He is the only coach in NCAA history to accomplish this feat to begin a coaching tenure.
In the last seven seasons, Danowski has guided the Blue Devils to six ACC regular season championships and four ACC Tournament titles. Duke has had 37 All-America honorees in this stretch, and Danowski has been ACC Coach of the Year three times.
“This amazing record of on-field success, coupled with his players’ ongoing commitment to academics and community involvement expected of Duke student-athletes, is a clear testament to John’s leadership,” White said.
