Over the next three weeks, The Blue Zone will be counting down the top five performances from each of Duke’s graduating seniors during their collegiate careers. This week, we continue with guard Seth Curry.
No. 1: Curry scores 29 points on one leg to lead Duke past Michigan State in the Sweet 16
The date: March 29, 2013
The game: Duke 71, Michigan State 61
Curry statline: 29 points, including 6-of-9 from beyond the arc and 7-for-7 from the foul line.
The breakdown: Seth Curry had struggled through injuries all season, but he was not about to let Duke fall short of reaching the Elite Eight.
Curry showed off his ability to score from anywhere on the floor, but the Blue Devils were locked in a tight contest against Tom Izzo's squad at the half. Then Curry came out and scored Duke's first nine points of the second half, knocking down three consecutive triples. The third—which came with the score tied at 38—was Curry's sixth triple of the contest, tying Jason Williams' Duke record for most 3-pointers in an NCAA Tournament game and sparking a 9-0 Blue Devil run.
Duke did not trail for the rest of the contest. Curry scored just six points in the final 17:12, but the Blue Devils locked down defensively and the senior made key free throws at the end of the contest to give his team the victory.
The quote: "Seth was at a different level than anybody on the court offensively,” Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski said. “To get 29 points in a game like this against an outstanding team is just an incredible performance."
