Duke tennis beats VCU 7-0 after the match was moved indoors

Duke was scheduled to begin its outdoor season against Virginia Commonwealth Tuesday. Inclement weather nixed that plan but it didn’t stop the No. 4 Blue Devils from sweeping the No. 28 Commodores 7-0 at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.

Duke (12-2) did not waste time asserting itself against VCU (11-4), winning the doubles point for the 13th time this season.

That momentum carried over to singles, with sophomore Raphael Hemmeler notching the first win 6-3, 6-3, giving him a team-leading 22 wins this season. Freshman Michael Redlicki followed that up with a 6-3, 6-0 victory that put the Blue Devils in control up 3-0.

Junior Chris Mengel sealed the victory, also winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.

“It was a really good match for us,” head coach Ramsey Smith said in a press release. “I thought we started off well in doubles and was very impressed with our singles.”
